5Gotta love ReacherFeb 21, 2010
OK, so Lee Child isn't exactly Tolstoy or Dickens, and his hero is a misanthropic thug, but who hasn't daydreamed about being a non-person, wandering about using wits, wiles, and fists to right injustices and settle scores? And that's Jack Reacher who does not try to subvert or trick the system with false IDs and such. He takes the bus, pays cash, buys new clothing when the old stuff wears out. No family, no friends, no entanglements, no regrets - a strong, self-reliant character who floats on the surface, diving deeper only when he feels an injustice has been done. The premise is strained, no doubt, but the writing is just good enough to make it readable. I find it a guilty pleasure and enjoy watching Reacher get himself into and out of difficult circumstances, trying to make things right. So, yep, most of the one- and two-star reviewers are correct, but then they probably think James Bond is not entertaining. If you don't much care for Bond, Reacher won't please you much either, for Reacher is the crude American cousin to Bond. Who says sociopaths aren't entertaining?

2I didn't get itFeb 14, 2010
I didn't get this book. I like thrillers where I can put myself in the protagonist's shoes, suffer with him through the book and eventually win with him/her (why not? I like happy endings). Being a normal guy, I find it easier to sympathize with the protagonist when he is an ordinary guy as well. Well Jack Reacher is no ordinary guy. Giganticly tall and mostruosly fit, he comes from nowhere and has no friends, nor family ties. Highly unreal. He is a tough guy who is not surprised to see people shooting at him for no apparent reason. in other words, he is a comic. And my problem is that I don't like comics. Even his relationship with Jodie - his former mentor's daughter - is so stereotypical....No, I didn't get this book, nor did i enjoy it. I gave it up after 280 pages with no regrets except for the price of the book. Shame, considering that it is not badly written after all.

Reacher is a man of many weaknesses and a societal misfit. He apparently excels at only one thing, dispensing justice, and he does it with a fury and violence the bad guys deserve. This is the third in the Reacher series and I am reading them in order. I believe I enjoyed this book about the same as the first two. If you want to "escape" reality for a while and get absorbed in a thrilling adventure, start reading the Reacher series. Well written and lots of fun.

Lee Child's work doesn't have people who like it, but rather people who adore it and are addicted to it. I am one of those people.

Tripwire is an excellent read. Child writes in a clear consise way that's never boring or condescending to the reader. His books are not for the overly squeamish, however. There is necessary violence as his main character, Jack Reacher seems unable to avoid involvement with the worst of the worst. He seems to fall into some very dangerous situations, lives extremely sparingly as his life takes him to the various cities throughout the U.S. Reacher respects women, is attracted but selective in his occasional romantic involvments. He's not celibate but somehow he hasn't found lasting involvement with what most of us consider a normal life. This is wonderful escapist stuff for those of us who are stressed and sometimnes think it would be great to live as Reacher does, with no strings attached. The work is balanced, Reacher's life can be lonely too.

The details of Lee Child's books are meticulously researched, right down to his descriptions of injuries we hope we never see. From one book to the next Child gives wonderfully accurate detail to an amazing variety of topics. His books capture your interest from page one and don't let go until the very last page. Be prepared for some surprises, the books are not predictable.

My advice to readers is to simply buy all the Reacher books from the get-go, have them on hand for when you need your next "Reacher Fix" and just want to let life pass you by for a little while. Personally, while it isn't really necessary, I like to read them in the order they were written.

Received to book very quickly, the pages on the right side were hard to read due to fading but the book was great.
